Thursday, December 4th 6:30 p.m. Uptown Holiday Party

Please bring your favorite homemade holiday dish. This is always the best meeting of the year and we ALWAYS have great food. The people of Uptown really know how to cook! Join us for meatballs (provided by some of your neighbors) and whatever other people decide to bring. There will be coffee provided and pop is sold in the machine outside fellowship hall.

We will be inviting some of our favorite guests: Councilman Brewer; Senator Rip Gooch; Representatives Donald Betts, Jr. and Tom Klein; Commissioner McGinn; our beat coordinator; Valerie Shirkey and all our other beat officers; our firefighters from Hillside; Arnold Dilley who used to deliver the Eagle in Uptown; Dave Pendergraft, Uptown's founder; Detective Chet Pinkston, our former community police officer; Virdena Gilkey, our Neighborhood Assistant; and any others you can come up with. If there is someone you feel should be invited, please call Lori at 688-1484 and tell her so she can give them a call.

Doors will open at 6:30 so we can all bring in our food and have a chance to chat before we eat at 7. Some of our members do not get home from work in time to be here before 7. We hope everyone in Uptown will try to attend. Don't miss this greatest party of the year. We'll be inside where it's warm so please be sure to put it on your calendar.

Halloween Party a BIG Success!!

At the bake sale, we earned $78.40 and had lots of wonderful baked goods to sell. The leftovers were sold at our monthly meeting the next Thursday so we brought in a pretty good profit for all donated goods. Thanks so much to all the bakers: Teresa Lybarger, Leslie Harvey, Nancy Oberg, Sherry Whitmore, Lori Lawrence & Robin Dodds.

Uptown Trivia

**and the winner is…**

Theresa Lopez! She correctly identified the sculpture as being in front of the ear doctor's office at 427 N Hillside. The name of the sculpture is Cochlea. Prestigious President Paul Oberg also responded correctly.

**Didjano…?**

Joseph Dellora of the 100 block of Volutsia exuberantly responded to last month's Didjano about the missing highflying log over First and Erie. The log, having grown around a utility cable over the course of time, had belonged to a tree which was removed due to old age from the southwest corner of the same intersection. Since Joseph drove under the tight roping log every morning, he was rather concerned about the safety issue. Over a 3 month time span he repeatedly called Westar Energy, asking them to check out the situation. When they finally did, they determined that the cable the log was on was actually a Cox Communications line. Westar called Cox, who was on the scene in an hour removing what was surely one of the oddest pieces of trivia in Uptown history. So many thanks to JOSEPH DELLORA for his perseverance. As for Joseph, he says to "thank Cox". **…nowUdo!**

New Question:

*GRAND PRIZE – A $5 gift certificate to NATURE'S MERCANTILE!!*

This month's guest Trivia Meister is Mike Barushok, who asks: Which street in Uptown, not including the arterials, is the widest? Seemingly oxymoronish, this street is also the narrowest! Arterials would be Hillside, Douglas, Grove, Central, First, and Second. So don't guess any of those! Since that leaves only 8 other possibilities, we must restrict responses to ONE per person, so think before you call Leonard at 685-4850.

New Restaurant Near Uptown

Cam Ranh Bay Oriental Restaurant has opened at 527 E. Central. That is the on the corner of Central and St. Francis. It was visited by Uptown neighbor Lynn Wasinger and she said it was GOOD so check it out.

Prowler in eastern Uptown.

During the week of Nov. 10th, a man was going door to door asking for money or to be let inside. He claimed to know the person at the house or was needing money. He worked his way down one block then went through the alley to the next block. At the next block, his accomplice helped him steal the homeowner's purse out of her house!

This was done by the man riding a bike on the sidewalk in front and finding the owners on the porch talking with a neighbor. He then fell on his bike very loudly to attract their attention. When all the concerned neighbors were at his side, his accomplice snuck in the unlocked back door of the house and took the purse.

This man is described as black, about 5'10" to 6' tall wearing a fuzzy stocking cap. His accomplice was a blonde haired white woman.

Anytime anyone YOU DON'T KNOW comes to your door asking for something or saying they are a "neighbor" or they know you, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!! There is only one way to catch these criminals and that is to make a report while they are still nearby so the cops can find them. You may not have any proof that they have done anything wrong, but IT IS NOT NORMAL for people to knock on stranger's doors and ask for money.

Strangers going door to door is a pretty common occurrence in Uptown and we all need to watch out or we may become the next victim of theft.

Christmas Caroling

Please join Norma Sowell and friends at her house on Saturday, December 6th. Norma lives at 3110 E. First and will open her home at 7 p.m. to anyone willing to sing. This is an annual event the first Saturday of each December. Norma would like to have some of her neighbors from Uptown to come and join in. She says you can stay only 15 minutes or as long as you want. Feel free to come!

Community Policing

Hello everyone, my name is Officer Valerie A. Shirkey I am your new Community Policing Beat Coordinator for your area. I've been a police officer for almost 7 years and I've been your 1st shift Beat Officer for the last year and a half. So, I have a great deal of knowledge about this area. If you have any questions for me please feel free to call me at Patrol East 688-9331 or Community Policing office 688-9545 please remember I'm on the streets or out on complaints so if I'm not here leave a message and give me some time to get back with you.

Just a reminder, Holidays are right around the corner and unfortunately this time of the year burglaries seem to rise. A few suggestions: For people that have to work always make sure that your doors are locked and if you have to leave keys for wanted people to get in don't leave them under mats, pots etc., leave the key with a neighbor also, all those expensive presents don't leave under the tree until your ready to open them. For people that will be out of town, make sure you let several of your neighbors know so they can keep a eye on your house and make sure papers and your mail does not pile up since that is a good indicator to a burglar that no one has been there for awhile. Finally, The more lighting that you have around your home the more likely that the burglar will go were he/she can not been seen. I hope that each of you have a safe and Happy Holiday season.
